Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme
The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) helps widows and children of Armed Forces members who passed away or served before. It gives money for their studies after high school. The government pays for this scheme using the National Defence Fund managed by the Prime Minister’s Office. Students can use this money to study at different technical schools for things like medicine, engineering, or business.
This program started in 2006. Every year, 5,500 students get this scholarship. Before, boys got Rs.2,000 each month and girls got Rs.2,250 each month. But from 2019-20, boys get Rs.2,500 and girls get Rs.3,000. This money gets sent to the student’s bank account every year through ECS. The program changed from paper applications to online in 2016-17.
The Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme 2023-24 is from the Kendriya Sainik Board Secretariat, part of the Ministry of Defence in India. It helps children of ex-servicemen or coast guard members and their widows who just started college. The goal is to support their higher education. These students can get up to ₹3,000 every month.

Prime Minister Scholarship Renewal Process
Here’s how you can renew your scholarship if you’ve received it before. After getting the first payment when the merit list comes out, you need to apply again each year to keep getting the scholarship money. You can apply for renewal online, just like you did for the first time.
But, there are some rules you need to follow to renew:
- You should get at least 50% marks in every semester or academic year.
- You must pass all your subjects each time you take exams.
- You can apply for renewal within a year after the merit list is declared. You can apply any time during the year, but not between January and April.
Prime Minister Scholarship for Integrated Courses
For integrated courses, like those combining two degrees, there are specific rules you need to know:
- To apply, you must have completed at least 10+2 education. Even if your first course isn’t professional, you still need to submit marksheets for both years of 10+2.
There are two kinds of integrated courses:
1. Integrated courses where both degrees are professional/technical, such as BE+ME or B.Tech+M.Tech. In these cases, only the first professional degree will get a scholarship.
2. Integrated courses where the first degree is academic (non-professional) and the second is professional/technical, like BA + LLB or B.Com + LLB. Here, you’ll only get a scholarship for the professional part of the course, not the academic part.
For example, in BA+LLB, the scholarship will only cover the LLB part because it’s professional.
If your first degree is non-professional and the second is professional, you need to successfully complete the first two years of the non-professional course to be eligible for the scholarship from the third year onwards. If you fail subjects or repeat years, you might lose eligibility.
Important Instructions for Students:
- Respond promptly to messages from Kendriya Sainik Board via SMS/email.
- Make sure the email and mobile number in your application belong to you. Only use an alternate mobile number for an Ex-Servicemen (ESM).
- Once registered, don’t change your email or mobile number because all communication will go to these.
- If there are any observations from ZSB/RSB and KSB about your application, fix them within 10 days. Otherwise, your application might be rejected.
- From January to May, KSB processes new applications. Renewal applications are processed throughout the year except during this time.
- Check your application status on the KSB website. Sometimes, it might say “pending” even though it’s being processed.
- Students studying abroad or through distance learning aren’t eligible for PMSS.
