Last day to submit forms online for RTE admissions has been pushed to May 10.

The last day to submit forms online for RTE admissions has been pushed to May 10.

The government of the state said this when answering a request to the court. The request was about a change the government made on February 9. This change said that private schools near government schools within 1 kilometer wouldn’t have to take students under RTE Act.

The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court on Monday that the deadline for online applications for RTE Act admissions will be extended to May 10. The original deadline was Tuesday (April 30).

The government made this decision while responding to a request to the court that disagreed with its February 9 change. The change said private schools near government schools within 1 kilometer didn’t have to accept students under the RTE Act.

A group of 17 people, including school managers and parents from less wealthy backgrounds, were asking the court for help. They wanted the government to change the list of schools on the “RTE 25% Admission portal” to include all private, unaided schools. This way, parents could apply for their kids’ admission for the 2024-25 school year.

A senior lawyer, Gayatri Singh, representing the group, argued that the government’s change went against the RTE Act. This law says that municipal schools, aided schools, and private unaided schools should all reserve seats.

She said that because of the government’s change, many needy students can’t get into schools. Last year, almost 500,000 students applied through RTE, but this year, it’s less than 50,000.

She asked for temporary help because the deadline for forms was April 30.

But a government lawyer, speaking for the department, said there were other requests in front of courts in Nagpur and Aurangabad, and one in Mumbai.

She said they would extend the deadline for forms by ten days, which the court accepted. The next court date for these requests will be May 8.

On April 24, the Nagpur court heard another request about the government’s change. The person asking said that the RTE Act’s idea of a “school” should include unaided schools. They said unless unaided schools are left out of the definition of “school” in the law, the change by the government goes against it.

The court found this argument important and set the next hearing for May 8.
